Scrollwork in the arabesque manner — mirrored C-curls and S-curls that braid into each other without a single straight line anywhere. The pattern repeats symmetrically above and below the middle of the sphere, which is why it looks deliberate from any angle rather than improvised, and why the coloured ball behind reads as pale patches between the vines.

The crown is where the detailing concentrates. A twisted rope band circles the top of the sphere like a collar; above that sits a block engraved with a small three-point lily; and above that a lantern-shaped cap with a horizontal crossbar finished at both ends in small spheres. The cap is what gives the pendant its height, and it is the first thing visible when the pendant sits against fabric.

Across the middle runs a polished band, and that is where the cage opens. To one side, a hinge pin topped with a small ball; to the other, a curved hook clasp ending in a matching ball — it swings aside with a thumbnail and presses back into place. The base closes with a rounded knob. It holds 18mm inner balls: pearl white and blush pink keep the scrollwork light, forest green and night blue give the arabesque the depth of an old engraving, and metallic gold or silver balls swing the piece warmer or cooler. Nickel-free and lead-free, with a top loop and bail that take a chain, a cord or a short beaded strand.

This is the most traditional-looking piece in the range — closer to an antique locket than to modern charm jewellery — which is exactly what some buyers come looking for.
