Oxidized Silver Angel Wings Heart Prayer Bell Cage Pendant

The black in this piece is the design, not a fault. Every groove — the feather lines on the wings, the curls of the scrollwork on the heart body, the ring of small beads around the central window — has been darkened after plating and then wiped back off the high points, so the surface stays bright silver and the recesses hold shadow permanently. That is the whole trick behind an antique finish: it costs very little to apply and it makes a small pendant read from a distance like something that has been in a drawer for fifty years.

The shape does the rest. Two feathered wings spread above the heart, each built from layered feather bars so the blackened grooves run parallel and the wing tips stay sharp. The heart body beneath them is openwork scrollwork rather than solid metal, and at its centre sits a heart-shaped window framed by a ring of tiny beads — the beads are darkened, the frame around them is not, which makes the window shimmer as the pendant swings. It is a small piece by design: it takes 12mm inner balls / 0.47in, the lighter of the sizes, sold separately, and the pale silver ball in the shots nearly disappears inside it, which lets the geometry of the cage do the talking.

Copper with a silver plate, plated inside as well, so the finish is even where you can see it with the halves apart. It opens on a hinge with a side clasp. Because it is small and all metal, it layers easily under or over a second pendant.

Blackened silver has a loyal buyer — she is the customer who already owns the polished pieces and wants the ones that look found rather than bought — and this design also works as a first "grown-up" pendant or a memorial keepsake, since a small ball cage carries meaning quietly.
