Two motifs, one wire. This ball is built entirely in filigree — fine round wire bent into loops and soldered in layers — and the wire carries two shapes in turn. First the blossoms: small flowers with a loop for a centre and rounded petals of wire around it, scattered across the surface at slightly different angles so the pattern never looks stamped. Then the butterflies, and these are the ones worth selling on: each is formed from paired looped wings with a narrow body between them and a tiny bead at the head, antennae drawn in the thinnest wire of the piece. They are open shapes, not solid ones, which is why they sit so lightly on the gold.

Working in wire rather than in a flat sheet is what gives the piece its density. There is almost no uninterrupted metal on the ball, so from across a room it reads as a golden texture and only resolves into flowers and butterflies as the wearer gets closer — which is exactly the effect that makes an intricately-made pendant worth its price. It also means the cage is open everywhere, so the chime travels: fit a ball and the ring is bright and immediate rather than muffled behind panels.

The finishing above the ball is not skimped either. A beaded collar of tiny spheres sits at the neck, and the bail is hung in a trapezoid frame with a bar across it and a bead finial on each end, so the top of the pendant reads as part of the design instead of a bare mechanical joint. Copper with an 18K gold plate, plated inside as well, so the finish is even with the halves apart. It takes 20mm inner balls / 0.78in, the fuller of the two standard chime sizes, sold separately — the gold ball in the shots makes the whole thing read as solid gold, while a coloured ball turns the filigree into a net of colour.

Sell it as the craftsmanship piece in the range: all-gold, no stones, nothing to date. Photograph it close on a dark ground and the wirework pops; show it in a hand for scale. Its buyer is the customer who already owns enamel and stones and now wants something that looks made rather than cast — and because butterflies carry their own meaning, it also gives you a story to write about transformation, which is an easy hook for birthday and milestone gifting.
