Anchor Interchangeable Colored Pearls Cage Pendant

An anchor, drawn the way a jeweller would rather than the way a harbour would. The ring is the body of it, a shank drops straight through the middle, the horizontal bar under the bail stands in for the stock, and two flukes flare out at the lower left and lower right as clean triangular arrowheads. The whole thing is open enough to see through, and the pearl sits dead centre inside the ring — which is the detail that makes the piece work: it is not a pearl next to an anchor, it is a pearl the anchor is holding.

The motif does something useful for a catalogue that is otherwise flowers and hearts. Anchors sell to a different shopper: the coastal and nautical customer, the sailing family, the navy wife, the woman who buys something small and silver for a beach holiday and then wears it all year. Meaning-wise the anchor carries steadiness, staying put, holding fast — the copy that nautical gifting runs on — and it layers better than most symbols because the silhouette is simple enough to sit with a chain, a cord or a second pendant without arguing.

Two styling notes from our own shoot. The empty-cage frame is genuinely attractive on its own — the black-background shots make the anchor outline read like a line drawing and would work as social images in their own right — and the coffee-coloured shell pearl is the pairing to lead with, because brown against silver gives the piece a vintage, almost brass-rubbing feel that photographs better than white does on the same background.

Measured as marked: 21.2mm, 0.83in high including the bail by 14.7mm, 0.58in wide. The two halves open apart on the hinge so the pearl can be swapped by hand, and it takes a shell pearl in the four colours shown or any of our 8mm zircon balls. Plate is applied front and back, and the bail is ribbed and slim, so a 1mm chain or a cord both sit properly.
