Two motifs, one job. A pair of angel wings opens upward from the top of the round cage, every feather blade cut with a stippled, grained surface and edged in polished line so the wings carry weight from across a room and texture in the hand. Where the two wings meet sits a small five-petalled blossom, and below it a V-shaped chevron folds down into the stem, which is where the locket takes its height. The front of the cage is a lattice of four slender pointed loops crossed over one another, with the butterfly laid over the top of them — four teardrop wings paved with small white stones — so the guardian and the butterfly share the pendant without crowding it.
Angel wings carry a meaning that sells itself, and it is worth naming rather than hinting at: being watched over, kept close, carried. That is why this piece works as a gift beyond the usual occasions — a comfort present, a sympathy gift, something for someone going through a hard stretch, or simply for the wearer who wears wings because of a person she is thinking about.
